Understand what a medical cost estimate includes

Separate hospital charges, support services and travel expenses before making plans.

China Hospital Finder · Planning checklist · September 30, 2026

1. Ask who is issuing the estimate

A hospital estimate, a coordination service quote and a travel booking cover different things. Identify the organisation responsible for each charge and the payee before agreeing to anything.

2. Separate the cost categories

Ask the hospital which consultations, tests, procedures, medicines and accommodation are included in its estimate. Separately clarify interpreter, coordination, transport and hotel costs where relevant. This guide does not provide prices or a treatment budget.

3. Clarify what could change

An initial estimate may depend on an assessment or an assumed scope of care. Ask what is provisional, how additional charges would be explained, and whether a deposit is required. Request written information about changes and cancellation terms.

4. Confirm the payment route

Ask the hospital about accepted payment methods and the documentation it can provide. If you plan to use insurance, confirm eligibility, authorisation and reimbursement requirements with both the hospital and your insurer. Do not infer coverage from a general insurer list.

5. Compare like with like

When comparing estimates, use the same categories and ask about exclusions. A lower headline figure is not enough to understand the total arrangement. Keep the provider’s written estimate and ask for clarification before paying.

Questions to take with you

  • Which part of the arrangement is confirmed, and which is still an estimate?
  • Who is the correct contact for changes or additional questions?
  • What do I need to do before the visit?
